CTRMA Issues Warning on New ‘Smishing’ Scam

Phone Scammer

The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority is warning of a new campaign of fraudulent text messages being sent to the public claiming an “outstanding toll amount” is owed. The texts, which purport to be from “Mobility Authority Toll Services,” also include a link requesting personal financial information to settle outstanding balances.

Similar scams have been reported by other toll agencies across the country in recent days.

“While customers can opt-in to Mobility Authority text messages reminding them of due dates and payment reminders, our texts do not include balances or ask for personal information,” CTRMA said. “Customers should not respond to anyone if they have not given express consent to be contacted via text.”

Those who believe they have received a fraudulent text can file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov, a site dedicated to sharing information on Internet crimes across law enforcement agencies.
