Daily Dossier: Dems Condemn Trump Tweets, Leander Considers Dropping Cap Metro, More Homeless Issues in Austin

House Democrats say they are planning a vote on a measure that strongly condemns President Donald Trump’s racist remarks aimed at four liberal congresswomen of color. After a day of widespread criticism, Trump was defiant on Monday, repeating his view that the women should get out of the United States. Although Trump had originally cast them as foreign-born, all four are U.S. citizens and three were born in the U.S.

The Leander City Council will make a big decision this week as it considers backing out of its agreement with Capital Metro.  On Thursday’s agenda is an item authorizing the negotiation of that possible withdrawal.  Mayor Troy Hill tells Community Impact there has been frustration for a long time over a lack of weekend service.  Leander’s contribution to Cap Metro last year was more than $5-million.

A fire ignites underneath 290 and West Gate Boulevard, which is home to one of Austin’s homeless camps, and is about five minutes away from the site of a new homeless shelter could open later this year.  The fire has amplified some people’s opposition to the location of that new shelter, but Mayor Steve Adler tells Fox 7 no plan will satisfy everyone.

“There will always be a reason why we shouldn’t locate it in any place.  There will always be neighborhoods and surrounding groups that wish it was somewhere else,” Adler says.

The Austin Fire Department says it was a trash fire.

The Travis County Central Appraisal District has purchased a new 72,000 square-foot building just off of I-35 and Highway 183 for $8.5-million.  TCAD says it was forced to expand because of a huge spike in the number of appraisal protests. Since 2005, TCAD says protests have increased by more than 200-percent.

Family and friends are set to remember H. Ross Perot, the colorful, self-made Texas billionaire who twice mounted outsider campaigns for president, at services in Dallas. A graveside service Tuesday morning at a cemetery will be followed by a memorial service at Highland Park Methodist Church in the afternoon. Both events are private but the church service can be viewed via livestream at rossperot.com or at a nearby church.
