Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson is attempting to seize on some of the reported strife within the Austin Police Department by luring some police officers away up to his city.
In a tweet, Johnson says, “If you work for Austin PD, are still interested in protecting and serving, and are considering retiring from the profession, don’t.”
If you work for Austin PD, are still interested in protecting and serving, and are considering retiring from the profession, don’t. Come work for the residents of @CityOfDallas by joining @DallasPD. We want and need you. #BigDallasEnergy 💯 https://t.co/hjCihYxyY7

The Austin Police Association and the City of Austin remain at odds over a new contract. The union presented a four year agreement earlier this month, which was rejected by the city council. After refusing to return to the bargaining table for a one-year contract extension, the union said it would let the current contract expire on March 31, and work without until a long-term deal could be reached.
The city council on Thursday approved an ordinance locking in pay and benefits for officers once the contract expires.
More than 300 Austin police officers are said to be approaching retirement eligibility, and a number of them have reportedly already filed the paperwork to do so.
