5. NEW ID REQUIREMENTS COMING FOR AIR TRAVEL

The TSA is trying to get as many people prepared as possible before October of next year when new requirements to fly will kick in. If your current drivers license doesn’t have a gold star in the top right corner, you won’t be able to use it as a valid ID.  Deputy DPS Director Skylor Hearn says they will continue to send notices in the mail.

“A lot of people got the original letter and said, ‘My license doesn’t expire for two years, why is DPS sending me a letter?’  The letter specifically addresses getting a new REAL ID-compliant card,” Hearn says.

If your license expires after October 2020, you’ll either need to renew early or request a duplicate.  Hearn says it’s best to start the process early.  DPS will be hiring more than 700 new employees to help with the influx of people needing to make the change.
