Despite spending millions of dollars a year on homelessness, Austin’s homeless population is not getting smaller. Assistant City Manager Rodney Gonzales said the city council has passed more than 30 resolutions over the past five years directly related to homelessness.
As the council looks at ways to eradicate the issue, Gonzales said the city is already going above and beyond. But critics say they want to see results, and with a rise in campsites, sleeping bags, and tents all over the city, that’s not what many people are seeing. Despite the resolutions, Gonzalez references that Austin’s homeless population has continued to rise, jumping by more than 100 people from just last year.
This year, more 2255 people were counted on the street.
