Early Voting for the May 1st election Ends today

Civic leaders across Texas are reminding voters to vote in this May first election.

Austin is no exception, last week former US Rep Beto O’Rourke called on residents to get to the ballots early.

Austinites have a series of propositions to mull over. Most contentious are Propositions B and F.

Proposition B, would reinstate the city’s camping ban. Those in favor of the ban say it would force the city to act in solving the homelessness crisis, adding, allowing people to sleep on the street is inhumane.

Those against say, the camping ban is simply going to see more homeless sent to jail. They say it would also make it harder to help those on the street as the will go back into hiding.

Proposition F would change the city’s form of government into a so called Strong Mayor System. Those in favor say it would do away with the City manager position and lend those responsibilities to the Mayors office. Comparing it to presidential powers but at the local level, like in New York. They say this would be a more democratic system.

Those against say, this would invite more corruption into city leadership. Some even on Austin’s City Council say they are opposed because it would grant the Mayor’s office Veto powers, and elevate the Mayor’s vote above that of City council.
