Tesla expects Travis County to give its supply chain a significant boost.
It’s possible the new Tesla Gigafactory could be open for business by late next year, which CEO Elon Musk calls “Giga Texas.” He said Travis County beat out all other regions in large part because of its tech sector, but also because of its geography, “For Giga Texas in Austin, its roughly two thirds the way across the US. So in terms of delivering cars to the Central US and the East coast, its just faster, it costs less… it fundamentally improves our economics.”
Work on the new site has already begun its early phases. Tesla will pump $1.1-billion into the factory, which is expected to generate about $9-million in tax revenue over a decade.
