The family of APD officer Amir Abdul-Khaliq has filed a lawsuit in the wake of his death while escorting a funeral procession. Abdul-Khaliq, a 17-year veteran of APD, was hit by a driver on Septembber 1, 2016 who illegally pulled into traffic and struck his motorcycle.
The lawsuit alleges that, during the procession, a member of the team signaled to a third-party driver that it was safe to proceed in front of the procession. Despite telling the third-party driver that it was safe to proceed, the team member failed to warn Officer Khaliq. The lawsuit also claims that the funeral home failed to adequately train its employees and did not take adequate precautions in the planning and execution of the procession.
Additionally, the lawsuit states that the route used by the funeral procession was negligently planned and executed. The
Commenting on the lawsuit, the family’s attorney, Mo Aziz, stated, “Officer Abdul-Khaliq devoted his career to the City of Austin and was a loving father and son. Unfortunately, due to the negligence of others he lost his life.”
The family is seeking $1-million.
