Federal lawsuit against Austin-area law enforcement heads to a court

The first court hearing in a federal class action lawsuit against Austin-area law enforcement agencies is set for this morning.  The suit alleges the Austin Police Department, Travis County Sheriff’s Office, and District Attorney’s office have discriminated against women in the way sexual assault cases are handled.  Attorney Jennifer Ecklund said the suit is about finding justice.

The lawsuit says that while more than 1000 women report sexual assaults to police each year, the number of cases taken to trial are usually in the single digits.
