As Austin Fire Department focuses on community wildfire preparedness, they’re discussing ways to mitigate the potential for them. The Department’s Justice Jones says grassland ground fires in the eastern part of Travis County are easier to battle than a fire in the woodland areas to the west. If a fire gets to the tops of the trees, which is called a crown fire, that’s bad.
Jones says they try to remove dead branches and vegetation to mitigate a crown fire.
