Five Austin police officers had to be taken to the hospital on Tuesday evening after an altercation with a homeless man.

According to a social media post from Austin Police Association President Ken Casaday, the officers were called about a man vandalizing cars in downtown Austin.  When the officers arrived, the man reportedly fought against his arrest, at one point sinking his teeth deep into one of the officer’s knees.

“The attack not only physically harmed our officers, but it will also cost the city a fortune in workers comp,” Casaday said.

Not only did the man bite the officer, he also clawed and scratched him, Casaday said.  Some of the other officers were also exposed to that man’s blood.

All five officers were treated and later released from the hospital.
