Next month, the abortion trigger law in Texas will take effect. Once that happens, performing or receiving an abortion anywhere in Texas will become a felony. In the wake of the United States Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe versus Wade, Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza this week has publicly vowed to protect women from any prosecution that they may face.
“Making abortion illegal will not end abortions; it will simply end safe abortions for too many,” said Garza. “Threatening women who seek abortion services and their medical providers with prosecution will only drive women to seek out dangerous alternatives and avoid necessary medical care, which will lead to higher rates of preventable maternal death.”
Garza has also expressed great concern for women who become impregnated after falling victim to sexual assault.
“In Travis County, we are squarely focused on holding accountable people who commit acts of violence in our community. Our communities are safer when women and families can make personal healthcare and reproductive decisions without the threat of interference from the state,” Garza said.
Garza is also imploring women to continue to seek out abortions if they feel they are needed or wanted.
