Autopsy results have revealed this week a fourth student in the Hays Consolidated Independent School District has died this summer from a fentanyl overdose. Two 15-year-old students and two 17-year-old students have passed away since early July.
“In just the last week, we know of at least two Hays CISD students who were administered Narcan by paramedics, first responders, or school nursing staff. One suspected fentanyl poisoning was on campus and the other was at a student’s home,” said Superintendent Dr. Eric Wright.
Narcan is a drug used to reverse the effects of a potentially fatal overdose from opioids.
“Every one of our high schools has been affected by either a suspected fentanyl death or serious overdose requiring Narcan. Some of our middle schools have had students affected as well,” Wright said.
On Friday, students on the middle and high school levels will be shown local impact videos detailing the impact fentanyl has had on the local community. Due to the serious subject matter, parents are being given the opportunity to opt their child out from viewing the videos, but district officials remain hopeful few parents will go that route.
“This is an urgent matter. We need to have those conversations, like, now,” Wright said during an August 24 press conference announcing the initial three fentanyl deaths in the district.
