Illegal Immigrant Health Care, Merck Backs Out of Austin Deal, Lee Iacocca Dies

The Daily Dossier on KLBJ

Providing full health insurance coverage to people in the U.S. illegally is becoming a campaign issue after a slew of Democratic presidential candidates indicated they’d support such a policy.

For now, the flagship federal health programs like Medicare, Medicaid and what’s known as “Obamacare” are off limits to all but U.S. citizens and legal residents.

And a CNN poll shows 6 in 10 Americans oppose the idea of providing health insurance coverage to those in the U.S. without permission.

Utility scams have become very common in Austin, and Austin Energy is again warning customers.

The utility says 33 scam calls or letters were sent out this week, many of which were sent to businesses.

Like so many of these scams, people are being told to buy prepaid debit cards, gift cards, of Bitcoin.

Austin Energy says it will never do that, any requests for that kind of payment should be a dead giveaway that it’s a scam.

More than two years after the Austin City Council approved a $7-million incentive package with pharmaceutical company Merck, the company now says it has backed out of that deal.

Merck would’ve had to invest $29-million and create 600 new high-paying jobs, and more than $7-million of that would have to be invested by the end of this year.

Merck hasn’t specified exactly why the deal was terminated.

Pictures continue to surface of homeless people making themselves at home all around city streets, including a man sleeping on mattress this week in downtown Austin.

It’s an issue that police are struggling to address, and Austin Police Association President Ken Casaday tells Fox 7 there’s also a safety concern for officers who’ll have to respond

“One of the things we’ve asked the department to do is provide a letter from the Health Department on what immunizations officers might need where you have human feces and rodents running all over the place, and dirty needles,” Casaday said.

As for that downtown mattress, Casaday says it’s perfectly legal under the new city council directives.

A giant among giants in the auto industry has died. Lee Iacocca is gone at the age of 94. He helped Ford introduce its first Mustang.

And he helped save Chrysler from bankruptcy. Iacocca worked with the United Auto Workers to get a billion and half dollar loan from the feds.

The company turned around by producing cheaper cars and minivans….then went on to pay back that loan early.

Iacocca also served as Chrysler’s spokesman for decades in t-v ads….telling the world “if you can find a better car, buy it.”
