A Guatemalan mother and her son in the country illegally are under threat of a more than $300,000 fine after taking sanctuary in a North Austin Church.
In a video statement published by local pro migrant group, Austin Sanctuary Network, the mother Hilda Ramirez said she was surprised by the amount ICE wants to charge her, calling it an abuse. She said ICE is torturing them, and is asking for help.
Translated from her native tongue, she said, “Please help us fight against this. This is not Just. We Don’t have a normal life, that’s all we want, and this is an abuse.”
Austin Sanctuary Network say the Trump administration is trying to silence immigrants who’ve taken refuge in churches across the country and Ramirez is not the only illegal immigrant who received a letter warning of the hefty fine.
Ramirez believed, ICE is trying to physiologically torture her, but swears to fight her case. The Austin Sanctuary Network called the fine a retaliation for hiding.
