A bipartisan nonprofit known as ‘New American Economy’ says 1.8-million legal and illegal immigrants live in Texas and paid almost $4-billion in federal, state, and local taxes in 2017. Laura Collins with the George W. Bush Institute says our immigration system doesn’t fit our 21st Century economy, even though unemployment is low and the economy is booming.
She says those industries are typically most associated with immigrant workers, like construction, restaurants, and manufacturing.
