Its official, Brian Manley is Austin’s newest Chief of Police.
Austin City Councilmembers voted unanimously for promoting Manley, but it did not go unquestioned. While supportive Council members Greg Casar and Ann Kitchen had a few more questions for the Chief before the final vote about mental health calls, policies, and the ongoing police contract negotiations.
A few activists present voiced their respect for the new Chief, but called into question the process in which Manley was picked, and many were still upset a national search was not made and other people not put up for consideration.
With Interim knocked off his title, Manley thanked Council, his family, the Department and Austinites for their support.
