Mayor Adler continues to look for new affordable housing funding streams

Housing affordability has become so closely linked to homelessness in Austin, and Mayor Steve Adler said the city is moving quickly to identify new ways to fund more developments.  Adler said one plan is to funnel money away from the Convention Center through a special taxing district called a “T-PID,” or Tourism Public Improvement District.

The T-PID limits the amount of hotel taxes going to the Convention Center, thereby freeing up millions to use on things like homeless housing.

But Adler said that it’s largely dependent upon whether voters reject Proposition B next month, which would give voters the final say on any expansion of the Convention Center beyond $20-million.
