Mayor Steve Adler is proposing a change that would remove ethics complaint hearings from public view for certain city employees. If approved by council, any complaint lodged against high-ranking city executives, as well as any employee not represented by a union, would go directly to the city manager for review, instead of the usual public process involving the Ethics Review Commission.
The proposal would not exempt council members from the Ethics Review Commission process, however. Critics say this only adds a layer of cover to the transparency the city regularly touts.
Findings of the closed-door review would only be made public after it has been handled.
