An ordinance and petition some Austinites hoped would derail the MLS Stadium deal for McKalla Place falls flat at City hall.
Mayor Steve Adler and Councilmember Greg Casar voiced their opposition. Mayor Adler said neither the petition or the ordinance had anything to do with the McKalla Place deal. Casar said the ordinance was so poorly worded it would likely have no effect on soccer, but could damage existing agreements the city has with sports and entertainment groups.
Adler called it a bad piece of policy, Casar called it, “at best a frustrating waste of hundreds of thousands of city dollars. And at worst its a corporate power play that could come at great expense to Austinites.”
That was the main reason he did not vote to adopt the ordinance, and neither did the rest of council. They also refused to adopt the petition, leaving both in limbo for now.
