The Non-profit Family Independence Initiative just received 1.3-million dollars from Austin area groups as the initiative sets up shop in the city.
The Initiative’s CEO Jesus Gerena says they want to take that money and give it to 250 low income families. at about $100 a month, Gerena admits, it’s not a lot of money, but what is important is that the receiving families are in charge of what’s done with it, and the bonds that are formed during the programs two year process.
Gerena says most families use it to invest in themselves, their kids or their communities.
