New homeless housing plan considered

Homeless man on the street
The Mayor’s Committee on People with Disabilities is looking outside the box for an answer to homeless housing.

The Austin State Hospital, which is being renovated to bring it up to code, has been proposed as the possible site for new housing for homeless people. The commission’s Robin Orlowski says this particular housing could focus on people with mental health needs, which could then keep them from being sent to jail.

Critics of the plan say it would be unfair to give someone the choice of either living under a bridge, or living in housing connected to the Austin State Hospital.
