New Mayor, Councilmembers to be Sworn-In This Week

Austin City Hall

The Austin City Council will welcome a new mayor and three new councilmembers this week following last month’s runoff election.

Mayor-elect Kirk Watson will formally take the reins from outgoing mayor Steve Adler on Friday.  New councilmembers José Velásquez, Ryan Alter, and Zohaib Qadri will also take part in a swearing-in ceremony.

Watson claimed victory over Celia Israel in fairly comfortable fashion, becoming the top vote-getter in both Travis and Williamson County.  It’ll be his second stint at the helm of the Austin City Council, having served a previous term as mayor from 1997 to 2001.

The Austin City Council inauguration will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2023.
