The changes are the first in a decade to AISD’s sex ed curriculum, but they have been controversial because of the pushback over whether some of the subject matter is too much for younger students.
Sexual orientation taught to 5th graders, sexual identity by 6th, condom use by 8th. These are all part of the sex ed overhaul in AISD, but it has plenty of detractors.
Some call it a radical agenda, others say it only glosses over traditional teachings like abstinence before marriage. And if a parent opts their child out what then? According to the district, that child will be place into alternative classes focused on emotional and social growth.
