A San Marcos Police officer seriously injured by a drunk driver over the weekend is facing a long road to recovery.
SMPD Chief Chase Stapp says Officer Claudia Cormier’s right leg was severed above the knee. One of the first on the scene that night was an off-duty nurse. “And she made some makeshift tourniquets out of, I think it was t-shirt material and had three makeshift tourniquets prepared and applied before our officers got there on the scene.” Stapp says the tourniquets applied by the nurse and police that subsequently arrived saved Cormier’s life, according to doctors.
Stap says Cormier has shown tremendous resolve and is already on the road to recovery. “I’ve seen her determination and dedication, so it’s, I think, we’re about to see how dedicated and how determined she is.”
Stapp says blood tests on the driver who hit Cormier are still pending.
