Program offering the homeless in Austin an honest day's work may be extended today

It’s known as the Workforce First program, which has been run by a local nonprofit called The Other Ones Foundation.  It’s reportedly been so successful since its launch last year that more than 100 people are on a waiting list to take part.

That’s in large part the reasoning behind the city council’s consideration today of coming to an agreement with Family Eldercare to help expand it.  Workforce First gives panhandlers a chance to earn their money through things like cleaning up parks or other green space.

Council approval will free up $720,000 in funding for the expansion of Workforce First.
