Very few council members are in favor of this. Now, the Travis County Democratic Party has voted unanimously to oppose it, too. At its latest meeting, Mayor Steve Adler, mayor candidate Laura Morrison, and council member Greg Casar all spoke out strongly against being audited.
Council member Ellen Troxclair has pushed hard for it, saying millions of dollars in wasteful spending could be identified if the audit gets the green light.
Troxclair also has found little support for the audit, which based on her lowest estimate could save $160-million in wasteful spending of your tax dollars. As to why the pushback from almost every member of the city council, Troxclair said.
A recent poll found 81-percent support for the audit. She said this would benefit every council member because they push so many social programs that spotlighting potential waste could free up new money to go toward those endeavors, such as housing.
