A proposal to create a special district to preserve Austin’s Lion’s Municipal Golf Course unanimously played through the State Senate. The bill (SB-2553) was authored by Austin Senator Kirk Watson. Austin Rep. Donna Howard will sponsor a similar bill in the House.
Muny is on the register of historic places for being the first integrated golf course in the South. It’s owned by UT and leased to the City of Austin.
The legislation would creat the Save Muny Historic District. It would have no taxing authority but could impose fees on users. The Statesman reports the land is worth over $200 million according to the Travis County Appraisal District but the university has offered to sell the land to the city for about half that.
