Tragedy has struck the City of Jarrell this week as two men have died while digging a trench. On Tuesday morning, the walls of that trench collapsed as the men were 24 feet below the surface, trapping them underground for nearly a full day.
On Wednesday, the two men were pulled from the collapse and, sadly, neither survived.
“This was a 23 hour incident in total, and 16 hours were required for all of the work that had to be done to reach the victims, ” said Mark McAdams with Williamson County Emergency Services District #5.
The men were buried in a precarious spot that required careful maneuvering to not only bring them back up, but also to prevent any further collapse of that trench.
“Heavy machinery had to be used to create a stair-step down to the level of the victims. Any other attempt to enter into that trench would’ve caused further collapse and loss of more lives,” McAdams said.
The identities of the two victims had not been made public as of noon on Wednesday.
