The Austin Independent School District has had to once again begin a search for a superintendent following the departure earlier in the year of Stephanie Elizalde, as well as the upcoming departure of current interim superintendent Anthony Mays.
On Thursday evening, the AISD school board met to select the person who will lead the district for the next several months, choosing Chief Operations Officer Matias Segura to fill that role.
“I’m humbled, but I’m prepared,” Segura said. “I’m excited to serve our school communities.”
Segura will officially begin his new role on January 3.
The search for a permanent superintendent will be much more robust as the board is expected to expand its scope across the nation. The person chosen is expected to be named by July. Per state law, the lone finalist will have to wait 21 days afterward until a formal offer of employment can be extended.
