U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) will speak at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new RM 2900 Bridge over the Llano River arm of Lake LBJ this afternoon. The original RM 2900 Bridge washed away during the flooding of the Llano River in October 2018. In addition to facilitating transportation in the region, the replacement bridge will help drastically reduce emergency response times by first responders. Also speaking at the ceremony will be Texas Department of Transportation Chairman Bruce Bugg, Senator Ted Cruz, and Representative Roger Williams.
President Donald Trump has granted Attorney General William Barr new powers to review and potentially release classified information related to the origins of the Russia investigation. The move is aimed at accelerating Barr’s inquiry into whether U.S. officials improperly surveilled Trump’s 2016 campaign. Former U.S. intelligence officials are criticizing Trump’s decision.
The hostility between President Donald Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is ratcheting up, with each questioning the other’s fitness for duty. Personal attacks flowed on both sides Thursday after a dramatic blow-up at the White House the day before. Both left open the prospect of working together in the future despite ongoing pressure on Pelosi to launch impeachment proceedings against the president. Trump said, “I don’t think anybody wants to be impeached.”
A bill to crack down on unwanted robocalls sailed through the Senate on Thursday, adding to a push by Congress to defeat the growing problem of phone scams and nuisance calls. The legislation would impose stiffer fines of as much as $10,000 per call on robocallers who knowingly flout the rules on calls and would increase the statute of limitations to three years, up from one year. It also instructs the Federal Communications Commission to develop further regulations that could shield consumers from unwanted calls.
