The City of Austin is about to break ground on its first sidewalk project from the 2018 voter approved bond. That included $20 million dollars for sidewalks.
It’s part of the voter-approved 2016 mobility bond. Sara Behunek of the city’s Corridor Program Office tells KXAN the improvements are critically important for the neighborhood. The repairs and upgrades will affect 24th through 26th Streets and Nueces Street. Longtime UT student Veran Hukeri tells KXAN the infrastructure is outdated.
The first project is about half a mile of a sidewalk in East Austin on 12th Street.
The city plans to spend about a million dollars this year on rehabbing sidewalks.
