As reports say Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk may be preparing to layoff up to 10-percent of the global Tesla workforce, Musk has said those layoffs will not impact anyone who actually builds automobiles or battery packs, nor employees tasked with solar installation. In fact, Musk is vowing to increase the number of hourly employees at Tesla.
In Austin, local nonprofit Skillpoint Alliance is trying to help fill some of those open manufacturing jobs by providing a no-cost Certified Production Technician class, which is slated to begin on June 27.
According to the nonprofit, students will learn about manufacturing safety, quality practices & measurement, manufacturing processes & production, and maintenance awareness. The course includes hands-on skills work with a Computer Numerical Control mill, soldering station, 3-D printer, VR headsets, the Skill Boss, and much more. Students will receive their OSHA-10 safety certification and Lean Six Sigma White Belt certification.
Upon graduation, students will be guided in finding employment as a manufacturing technician, process technician, equipment technician, fab associate, machine operator, and/or assembler at manufacturing facilities at Tesla, as well as other semiconductor companies such as Applied Materials, Athena Manufacturing, and Samsung Austin Semiconductor.
“Entry-level technicians can typically earn between $16 – 20/hour, with ample opportunity for advancement and further training,” the nonprofit says.
