State lawmakers take up the issue of dockless scooter regulations

Cities are scrambling to come up with their own local ordinances.  Austin is no exception.  Meanwhile, Senate Bill 549 has been introduced to the Senate Committee on Transportation that would create a statewide model for dockless scooter ordinances on the city level.  State Senator Royce West authored Bill 549 to regulate scooter safety, as well as a way to prevent cities from imposing too many regulations that stifle profits.

New Braunfels has already banned scooters.  San Marcos is considering doing the same.  West’s bill would also require helmets for riders and proper storage that doesn’t block streets or sidewalks.

Requiring a valid drivers license has already met some pushback, though.

Critics of that say a lot of teens depend on these scooters to get around.
