Democrat state senator and former Austin mayor Kirk Watson has announced his plan to retire from the Senate at the end of April. Watson will take on a new role as the first-ever Dean of the University of Houston’s Hobby School of Public Affairs. His decision to leave will force a special election to fill his seat through 2023.
