Up to ten thousand complaints of price gouging during the pandemic have been received by the Texas Attorney General’s office.
Attorney General Ken Paxton said each complaint is investigated and several lawsuits have been filed. “As long as the Governor is acting under the disaster act, I would say, we have a responsibility for dealing with these issue.” He continued, once the disaster declaration over, they will continue to investigate the claims made during the corona crisis.
Paxton said there is no rule of thumb to determine if increased prices are market driven or if its price gouging. Penalties for price gouging are up to ten thousand dollars per violation, and even higher when elderly victims are involved.
