Texas lawmakers to debate Increasing sales tax next week

Increasing sales tax to offset property tax relief to be debated next week

The Governor, Lt. Governor and Speaker’s plan to increase the sales tax in order to pay for property tax relief is expected to play out next week at the State Capitol.  The debate is expected to come up as the House and Senate hash out the budget.

Representatives of the State House and Senate will begin budget negotiations on Tuesday. Rice University Political Scientist Mark Jones said this will be the first time the plan to raise the sales tax will be discussed. Jones claims Dan Huberty wants 80{6d294a0824f6f808f1cc9dcde10d35acd237638cfa4e8dd876851c8906eac7a1} going to property tax relief.

Huberty wants to dedicate remaining 20-percent to public schools.

The conference committee will also have to decide whether to go with the senate’s plan for a $5-thousand dollar pay raise for teachers and librarians or to leave it up to the school districts.
