Texas senate bill would make it near impossible for ex-felons to run for office

If the bill passes, ex-cons would be able to run only if they were pardoned. It comes in response to former felon Lewis Conway Jr’s failed bid last year for a seat on the Austin City Council.

Conway says this is more than just folks having served their time… It’s a matter of when does their sentence end

The US Constitution does not ban people with criminal records from running for federal office.

Conway said should this pass, state law would take precedence over federal law.
