The Austin city council moves ahead with more taxpayer-funded housing

A recent decision to approve a zoning change on Powell Lane and Wonsley Drive has paved the way for nearly 300 new low-income housing units.  Council member Greg Casar calls subsidized housing a long-term investment that stabilizes rental rates for vulnerable neighborhoods.

Casar and Mayor Steve Adler also said it will stave off gentrification.

The housing will be a mix of efficiencies, 1, 2, and 3-bedroom apartments.
