Mendez Middle School is perhaps AISD’s biggest challenge, now having failed to meet state standards for the sixth consecutive year. Public school groups like the Texas State Teachers Association say it’s a product of not enough money being spent. Clay Robison is with TSTA and he said funding does make a big difference.
In AISD, eight schools got an F this year from the Texas Education Agency. Among them, Dobie Middle School, Webb Middle School, and Mendez Middle School, all of which are far above average in terms of per-student spending: about $13,000 at Mendez, $9300 at Webb, $11,00 at Webb. They all failed.
It’s a stark contrast to those that didn’t fail, like O’Henry Middle where spending is $7800, or Keeling Middle where spending is $7500 a student. AISD had more failing campuses this year than it has seen since 2015.
