The City of Austin’s network falls victim to hackers

Russian hackers may have hit the City of Austin’s networks, according to a report in The Intercept.

The Intercept reports the hack is linked to a state-sponsored Russian group calling itself Berserk Bear. In that report, it says the hack was traced back to October, adding that on October 9 the city council learned about it and met a few days later to discuss it in a closed door session. The city is not commenting on the claim that the attack was Russian, but officials do say the city’s network was breached as part of a multi-municipality attack. Officials say no personal data was compromised and no critical systems were impacted.
