The Eyes of Texas remains UT alma mater

The Eyes of Texas is still UT’s alma mater for now.

In a written statement UT President Jay Hartzell says, “As we move forward and continue to perform and sing “The Eyes,” it is critical that we understand the full history of the song.”

That follows many of football players, student activists, and more rallying for a change, saying it was used in mistral shows.

Hartzell says the history of the alma mater needs to be shared and understood, to, “provide context around its meanings, origins and roles during the past 120 years.”

UT’s President is calling on Associate Dean for Equity, Community Engagement and Outreach in the College of Education Richard Reddick, a Texas Ex, to be part of a committee looking into and detailing the song’s past and come up with recommendations on how to move forward.
