And if you guessed that the number of people living on Austin streets has grown since last year, you’re correct. According to the Ending Community Homelessness Coalition’s Point in Time county, the homeless population has risen by 5-percent since last year, althouth Executive Director Ann Howard said it could be more than that.
As of January, ECHO’s count is 2255 homeless people.
2018’s headcount was 2417 people, and that number was up from 2036 in 2017.
Even with the overall rise, Howard says youth homelessness actually dropped by 25{6d294a0824f6f808f1cc9dcde10d35acd237638cfa4e8dd876851c8906eac7a1}.
