To help facilitate a new speed management program the Transportation Department wants $500,000 to further its Vision Zero initiative, aiming for zero deaths on Austin streets. City engineer Eric Bollick said one idea is to extend the curbs outward at certain intersections, bottlnecking the outer lanes and forcing you to slow down. Bollick also said that this well also help to shrink the amount of distance to cross the street.
The plan is to buy new digital signs, construct traffic-calming devices, and ultimately lower the speed limit within the city limits.
