Travco DA: APD officers justified using lethal force in Ancira shooting

Austin Police sign

Eight APD cops involved in the shooting death of an East Austin man in March will not face a Grand Jury.

Travis County DA Margaret Moore’s office says the officers were justified in their use of lethal force under Texas law when five cops shot Victor Ancira as he lunged at officers with a pickaxe. Ancira had called 911 saying he killed his father and brother. When officers responded, Ancira kept them from going in the house. Three officers previously tried non-lethal means including tasers, which Ancira blocked with his chair. Ancira died at the scene. Officers discovered the father and brother were unharmed but Ancira apparently left a suicide note.
