Travis County Commissioner Reluctantly Votes to Approve Tax Rate Increase

Tax Raise Meter Maxed Out

Travis County has approved an eight percent tax rate increase on Tuesday which was part of a $1.2 billion budget that the county adopted.

Travis County Commissioner Gerald Daugherty says he didn’t really want to do it but he realized between needed staff raises and the lower rollback rate coming next year, he had to vote to approve. The new budget gives staff a three percent raise.

“A three percent raise in this community is not very much, especially when your average salary for the Travis County employee is around $50,000.” said Daughtery.

County Law enforcement got less than that and Daugherty says he wants to find ways to get the sheriffs office and corrections officers more money for the next budget cycle.

Commissioners got a fourteen percent raise for the second consecutive year, bringing their salaries to $135,662.
