Travis county debates ways to improve emergency services

EMS and Fire

A deadly fire last week in Western Travis County reignites the debate about how to get more fire and EMS stations built.
As residents in remote parts of Travis County complain about emergency service response times, Commissioner Gerald Daugherty said the County itself cannot put money into Emergency Services Districts.
The ESD system is paid by the $100 valuation of the appraisal, he continued, and they can only get 10-cents out of every $100 evaluation.
But, Daugherty added the ESDs can have what’s called an overlay that voters approve to bring more than just the ten cents in per taxpayer.
In some areas like Lago Vistavotors elected to double up on that and give 10-cents each to EMS and Fire.
