Travis County settles a lawsuit that said the local legal system did not properly handle sexual assault cases.
Travis County Commissioners all voted in favor of spending $580,000 tax dollars on the settlement and make reforms to address and prioritize sexual assault cases.
Assault Survivor Marina Garett says this is a good first step but notes the City of Austin is still a defendant in the lawsuit and should follow the County’s lead.
To that, Austin City Councilmeber Greg Casar took to twitter and agreed. “The City of Austin is a defendant in a lawsuit filed by over a dozen survivors of sexual assault, centering on failures at the police dept. over the years. The City should publicly apologize, enact reforms, & settle the suit, rather than fight in court.”
