Trump to Launch Re-Election, Austin to Purchase Land for New Homeless Shelter

The Daily Dossier

1.) President Trump is expected to formally launch his re-election bid tomorrow along with a brand new campaign ad.  Trump spent the weekend setting the tone for his re-election push, blasting Democrats, the Russia probe, the media, touting his border wall, and warning of a national disaster if he loses.

2.) 50{2a63e07d84fe12ceff3a79b3b7d16ceb8565bd2470b26c53e2419132d99be4c6} of Texas would definitely vote to re-elect President Trump which 50{2a63e07d84fe12ceff3a79b3b7d16ceb8565bd2470b26c53e2419132d99be4c6} say they will vote against the president, regardless of who his opponent is.

That’s the finding of a new UT/Texas Tribune poll.  Pollsters say the 50-50 split shows just how divisive this president has become.

3.) City leaders have been very hush-hush about the location for a new South Austin homeless shelter.

On Thursday, we may have an answer.  On the city council agenda is an item that seeks to spend $8.6-million on a land purchase near Ben White and Banister.

The city council has said this shelter would be much smaller than the ARCH downtown, serving only 50-100 people.

4.) Police and EMS are still crunching the numbers, but it looks like there were fewer major crashes during this year’s ROT rally than in previous years.

As of late last night, Austin-Travis County EMS had responded to seven crashes, none of which were fatal.  There were 18 crashes last year.

5.) A recent survey from the Cox Automotive group shows 40{2a63e07d84fe12ceff3a79b3b7d16ceb8565bd2470b26c53e2419132d99be4c6} of people say having access to a car is important, but owning one is not.

In response to that, rental car company Hertz is rolling out a program in Austin allowing people to pay a monthly membership fee to have full access to a range of cars, SUVs, and trucks.

Austin is one of only two cities to have this service.

6.) The Austin City Council is expected to unanimously approve the repeal of a decades-old ordinance allowing about 400 property owners on Lake Austin to be exempt from paying property taxes.

Because many of the properties cross the city-county boundary, the council says the properties will only be taxed for the portions that fall directly within the city limits.
