Drivers will soon notice changes along I-35 between Holly Street and SH 71/Ben White Boulevard as the Texas Department of Transportation moves forward with the next segment of the I-35 Capital Express Central project.
“TxDOT is moving forward on our commitment and schedule to provide congestion relief projects through downtown Austin,” said TxDOT Austin District Engineer Tucker Ferguson. “Construction along the Lady Bird Lake segment will help enhance safety and improve connectivity to and through Austin.”
As a Texas Clear Lanes project, the Lady Bird Lake segment will construct two high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) managed lanes in both directions along I-35. The project will also reconstruct the Lady Bird Lake bridge, construct a single-point urban interchange (SPUI) at Riverside Drive that will accommodate future Capital Metro light rail routes, add a pedestrian-only bridge at Woodland Avenue, and improve bicycle and pedestrian paths along the corridor.
The first segment of the I-35 Capital Express Central project, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard bridge reconstruction, began in October 2024.
